Today I would like to bring your attention to an amazing charity we are involved in supporting at 1Skin Solution. Not because I want to brag or craft an image but because I feel such an important charity deserves some recognition and hope that some of my readers may also may be able to help. Those who know me know that I feel very strongly about animal welfare. I started my journey from Vegetarian to vegan this year and 1Skin Solution received its cruelty free accreditation. We also make monthly donations to PETA and Animals Australia.
A few weeks ago I was introduced to another charity, Foster Care Angels by a business colleague who knew how I felt about violence and abuse against innocent and vulnerable beings. They are a unique charity in that no other charity does what they do. Foster Care Angels was founded by Kelly and her husband after first hand experience as crisis foster carers gave them some insight into the trauma faced by children and young people entering foster care.
They are unfunded, 100% volunteer run and rely solely on donations and fundraising to continue their service.
They run several program lines … Care Packages, providing respite for foster cares at risk of placement breakdown, fund placements for foster children to attend self esteem / self care camps and help out residential care facilities (group homes) . They are always looking for gaps so that THEY can expand and fill them!
Care Packages are their main program and the reason they founded FCA. They make 4 different age groups and they are age and gender specific. Each Care Package is a backpack containing comfort items, toiletries and self care items, school supplies, something to read, and something to play with. They cost us between $16 and $36 to make and distribute.
FCA is fully registered and tax deductible and donations can be made via a secure online facility on the website website.
There are currently more than 17,000 kids living in ‘out of home’ care in NSW and they need our help!
They need HEAPS of stuff!!!! The care packages are made for newborns up to 17 years old. There is a full list on the website http://www.fostercareangels.org but this is an overview. It is easier for the volenteers at FCA to buy toys and reading books for consistency but most other items are consistent. They need soft toys, torches, sanitary pads, roll on deodorant, journal, hair brush, hair ties, face washer, tooth brush, tooth paste, combs, school supplies, red, blue and black pens, lead pencils, erasers, sharpeners, glue sticks, rulers, coloured pencils, textas, highlighters, crayons, colouring books, baby blanket, baby bottle, sipper cup, baby dummy, … and the list goes on! They make up about 1600 care packs per year, 400 for each age bracket, but will accept any amounts of the above items. It all helps!
They also fund camp placements for kids, designed to increase self esteem and self worth for kids that would otherwise not be able to attend. These camps are usually aimed at 12 years plus. Another program is providing respite for foster carers who are at risk of placement breakdown. As foster carers, they know first hand how difficult this role is and “sometimes you just need to step away for a weekend and reconnect as a couple to be better able to care for the kids in your care.”
FCA are fully registered and tax deductible if you or anyone you know is looking to support a local worthy cause, and being 100% volunteer run means that the money received goes towards our programs not to salaries Their status can be verified at http://www.abr.business.gov.au/SearchByAbn.aspx?abn=42384748188
