We hope you enjoy our site and have fun creating beautiful lip balms!
Benefits of Zinc Oxide in your natural lip balm
We offer zinc oxide as an extra benefit in our customised lip balms. Zinc Oxide has many skin care uses including being a very effective broad-spectrum sun filter, anti-bacterial properties and the ability to help soothe and protect irritated skin. It provides an excellent barrier to the sun and other irritants. Zinc oxide is included in the FDA and TGA’s list of approved sunscreens.
This physical sunscreen works by reflecting the suns rays away from the skin. UV Agent for UV protective moisturisers, sun care, skin conditioning and colour cosmetics. This ingredient has no limitation on percentage permitted in a leave-on product. Along with titanium dioxide, zinc oxide is considered to have no risk of skin irritation. It can also be an anti-irritant and potentially an antioxidant. It is somewhat astringent, antiseptic and antibacterial. It also can have anti-acne benefits and when taken orally, zinc may have positive effects for wound healing and other health benefits.
When used in sunscreens preparations it provides both UVA and UVB protection. At the appropriate particle size zinc is transparent in the visible light spectrum but opaque in the UVC ranges, thereby avoiding a whitening effect when incorporated into sunscreen preparations. Zinc oxide is also used when a white colour is desired for a product. In a lip balm this can help deliver a nice opaque tint when using mica. It is relatively non allergenic. It is also used as a thickening and lubricating ingredient.
1Skin Solution custom lip balm
It can be very difficult to formulate with as it tends to clump together making creams thick and lumpy and can leave the skin looking white and feeling chalky. Here at 1Skin Solution we use Zinc and MCT oil dispersion in our custom lip balms. This grade avoids that and makes it easy to create products with up to 20% Zinc Oxide as active due to the fine and regular particle size found in this liquid dispersion.
MCT oil is another name for caprylic Capric Triglyceride, a natural emollient extracted from vegetable oil that aids in the dispersion of the zinc particles. It has a very light and non-greasy skin feel making it great for sunscreens, anti-ageing formulations and lip balms.
Most people are familiar with Extra Virgin Olive Oil in the kitchen. However, did you know that it is great for your skin also?
Here are our Top 10 uses for EVOO for your skin:
You can either go out and purchase a bottle of cold-compressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil, or you can be efficient and purchase naturally-made high-quality skin care products that already have EVOO in them, like our custom-made lip balm, where EVOO is one of the oils we use!
The benefits of Titanium Dioxide are widely known. It is found in almost every sunscreen produced, because of its high refractive index and its ability to absorb UV light. Most sunscreens designed for infants or those with sensitive skin are based on Titanium Dioxide as it is believed to cause less irritation.
Despite its harsh chemical-sounding name, Titanium Dioxide is actually very much naturally-occurring. It is the oxidized version of the element Titanium. It is a substance that occurs in nature and is as old as the earth.
However, in recent years, the debate about its toxicity prevails. Much like many things, the safety of Titanium Dioxide depends on how it is manufactured. The particles used in sunscreen have to be coated by silica or alumina, because in a photocatalytic reaction (exposure to light), titanium dioxide can create radicals that are carcinogenic and can damage the skin. Moreover, avoid Titanium Dioxide that is produced into the ultra-fine particle size (smaller than coarse or fine particle size), as some studies show this size allows it to penetrate the body better and may cause some damage.
What does this mean for you? This is the definitely the case of Caveat Emptor … Let the buyer beware!
You can use Titanium Dioxide safely, but you have to do your research. As buyers and users of products, we have the responsibility of researching what materials go into your products, especially those are absorbed through our largest organ, our skin.
Here at 1 Skin, we use Titanium Dioxide, but only as an option for those that choose to add it to our custom-made lip balms. You will be glad to note that the Titanium Dioxide we use is listed as a safe pigment, with no known adverse effects. It is not listed as a carcinogen, mutagen or toxin in any safety regulatory publication.
This does not end the debate, but rest assured, 1 Skin supports beauty that is “good for you”, and we endeavour to do our research prior to including ingredients into our line. 1 Skin absolutely insists on making pure, natural and simple choices to protect your health.
When you are creating a lip balm to promote your business you first need to look at your customer. Are they male or female? Outdoors types? Health conscious? Are they fashion and style conscious?
So firstly you will need to decide if your customer will want their lip balms to be tinted with colour or not. Obviously men will not have a need for deep red tinted lip balm (my favourite). If your main customer is male and spends a lot of his time outdoors then you will opt instead for a sunscreen such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. The added sunscreen also gives a nice opaque white colour to the balm. If using either of the sunscreens you would not need to add pearl white mica. If you add any of the coloured mica’s to either of the sunscreen it then creates a gorgeous pastel effect to the colour.
Woman love a tinted lip balm and we have a great selection of mica’s that can either be used in a low percentage that will just tint the balm and not stain the lips or we can use a high percentage so you get a gorgeous tinted lip balm. When ordering your balms and choosing a tint make sure you put a comment in the comments box stating what your desired outcome is.
Bees are hard workers, but did you know they even work hard to give you great skin? Bees have to ingest as much as 8 pounds of honey to produce one measly pound of beeswax! They even travel the equivalent of 6 early orbits to produce that 1 pound, according to the eHow article on beeswax.
For this, we should be grateful! We at 1 Skin use beeswax as one of the available wax bases for customized lip balms. We do so knowing all the great properties it provides.
Beeswax acts as a great moisturizer, because its natural properties act as a water repellent. It is even naturally sun-protecting. Finally, it combines other ingredients well and adheres more permanently to the skin surface, thus providing protection against harsh environmental damage. Think about it: bees use this wax for their home; it must provide superb protection!
Not only does it soften the skin, beeswax is also anti-inflammatory. It remains “biologically active” and thus remains anti-germicidal. The normal vitamin A it contains is retained even after it is processed; this is vital for cellular development. In fact, the world-renowned Mayo Clinic recommends lip balm made from beeswax for chapped lips.
We want to also clarify the misconception that beeswax clogs pores and encourages acne formation. This is simply not true! When beeswax is used properly in a natural fashion, beeswax should not irritate the skin OR clog pores, so make sure you do proper research into the quality of your skin care products!
Finally, if you suffer from allergic reactions to bee stings, you should err on the side of safety and avoid beeswax-based products. At 1 Skin, we offer 2 other wax bases (candelilia wax and petroleum jelly) and 2 butter bases (shea and cocoa) to allow you to customize your product. Keep reading our blog and we will feature these other wax / butter bases and their benefits, in the future, so you can select the one that fits YOU the most!
When a skin care product claims to be ‘all natura’ what they/we mean to say (at best) is ‘nature identical’ or ‘nature derived’.
‘All natural’ should be the way it exists in nature or that it is extracted from nature without any chemical modification.
Here are a few of my favourite all natural products that can be great for you skin.
Baking Soda (sodium bicarbonate) – is a great skin exfoliator. I use it a lot, either mixed into my cleanser of just mixed into a paste with water. Gently massage into your skin and rinse with luke warm water. Very effective! Sodium bicarbonate also has mild antiseptic properties so can be great for acne prone skin. It is also great in the bath to sooth itchy skin.
Natural Yogurt - I heard of this one when I took a cosmetic chemistry workshop. The chemist who was taking the class told us that he was involved in a test where the panel was given a tray of different face creams and they were to choose what was most effective as a moisturiser. I can’t remember the exact numbers as it was a while ago, but a majority of them chose the yogurt over the other creams. The other creams in the trial were a selection of the creams you buy in stores. I have tried the yogurt as a night cream and woke in the morning to nice smooth skin! I have since looked into it and have found a lot of people also use it as a mask. It is high is lactic acid and beneficial bacteria which can be great for soothing cooling and hydrating inflamed and irritated skin.
Pure Honey – has anti septic, anti-bacterial and healing properties. It can be applied directly to help heal sores. Honey’s natural antioxidant and anti-microbe properties and ability to absorb and retain moisture make it great to treat acne, either dabbed directly on spots or as a face mask, and has been used successfully to treat diabetic foot ulcers.
Aloe Vera – serves as a water-binding agent for the skin and has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial qualities. The Aloe Vera plant is readily available to purchase in a lot of plant shops and is nice and easy to break off the succulent stem where the gel can be squeezed out. It is good for wound healing but the effectiveness is a little limited.
Sea salt and Epsom Salt – are both great wound healing salts when used in the bath. They also make great body exfoliators and aid in detoxifying and relaxing aching muscles. I love salt baths!!
Personally I love beautifully packaged skin care. I like the whole indulgent experience of it. But I also like to use these natural ingredients as part of my routine. Do you use any naturally occurring ingredients in your routine?
Petroleum gets a lot of bad press and this bad press is based on fiction.
I like to promote health and well-being. My products are tested on me and not on animals. I do not wish to harm anyone with toxic products – that would not be good business!! I take pride in the fact that I take the time and care enough to research ingredients and produce high quality products. I want my customers to enjoy my products!
The following facts on Petroleum are based on Science, meaning there is scientific evidence to back up these facts.
FACT: Cosmetic-grade mineral oil and petrolatum are considered the safest most nonirritating moisturising ingredients ever found (Sources: Cosmetics & Toiletries, Jan 2001, pg 79; and Cosmetic Dermatology, Sept 200 pg 44-46)
FACT: Petroleum is a natural ingredient derived from the earth.
FACT: Petroleum can help the skin’s outer layer recover from damage, reduce inflammation, and generally heal the skin (Source: Acta Dermato-Venero-logica, Nov-Dec 2000, pg 412-415)
FACT: The confusion around petroleum is also caused by some cosmetics companies and misinformed people who use the information about non-purified mineral oil as a scare tactic. This is considered “fear mongering” and “junk science”!
FACT: Mineral oil and petroleum jelly used in cosmetic formulas is highly refined and purified.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and we all have the freedom to make our own choices. Personally when making a choice I like to know I have all my facts right. I love petroleum jelly. When I had fraxal laser on my face it was the only product I was allowed to use on my skin for an entire week. I am quite sure my doctor was not out to poison me!
Thank you for reading. You can also follow my personal blog where you can add comments and ask questions. http://1skinsolution.wordpress.com/
We are pleased to present to you our new range of tinted lip butters.
I have been working hard to create something that is easy to use. I love the look of lip stick but it is so hard to wear for me. I find it is drying and often cakes around the edges and corners of my mouth. Not very appealing. Gloss is great but can tend to be a little gooey and I can’t stand it when my hair drags it around my face – Yuk! It also does not quite have enough staying power. So I needed to create something in between with a little bit of something different and I have searched this earth high and low to find these flavours that I wanted in my 1Skin tinted lip butters.
Ingredients: Cocoa Butter, Coconut Oil, Petroleum, Shea Butter, Capric/Caprylic Triglyceride, Beeswax, Candelilla wax, F & C G Colour, Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Flavour, Sweetener, Vitamin E, Grapefruit Seed Extract.
These tinted lip butters will retail for $14.50 but for a limited time we are offering an introductory offer of $11.50. That is a 20% discount. Please use the code 1skindiscount when checking out. We are still waiting for the images – the tinted lip butters are with our photographer at the moment and as soon as we have the images we will load them on the site.
From left to right: Almond Biscotti, Guava Lemonade, Strawberry Rose Champagne and Coconut Plum. For a detailed description go to the the lip products section on OUR PRODUCTS page.
I will have to admit I am a little bit vain….
When I was a personal trainer I was obsessed with super foods to obtain a beautiful body. I spent a LOT of money on supplements, books, nutrition courses and “special” doctors.
I think I have done pretty much every trendy diet plan.
When I started to become interested in the skincare industry I did the Perricone diet. A diet rich in salmon and berries (plus other highly nutritious foods) designed by Dr Perricone for aging skin and weight management. He also has a diet plan for acne management. I ate huge amounts of salmon and berries amongst other foods to promote healthy skin.
So…. After the last 10-15 years of my experience if I had to pick 1 super food that boosts my skin health it would be the avocado!!
I must say I was not a fan of the avocado until a few years ago but now I love it in salads and on sandwiches. Especially on toast with Vegemite. I can honestly say within a few hours of eating avocado I notice my skin is a lot more radiant and softer looking.
AVOCADO – THE FACTS
Avocado is a fruit rich in monounsaturated fats (about 75% of the fruit). These are “good fats” that lower bad cholesterol! These fats contain omega 3, oleic linoleic and linolenic acids! Huge skin benefits especially if your skin is dry!
Avocados are high in fibre, potassium, b vitamins, vitamin e and c and vitamin k. Also antioxidants such as lutein and polyphenols – no wonder they are great for your beauty regime!
They help to prevent cancer, diabetes and also high blood pressure.
We offer avocado oil in our custom lip balms. Why would you choose it as an ingredient?
It contains vitamins A, B1, B2, D, E and beta carotene. It is known to have regenerative and rejuvenating properties. It also has excellent penetrating abilities and natural sunscreening properties and last but not least is an excellent antioxidant.
Pass me the guacamole please!!
The disbelief that people still have for natural skin care products may possibly be due to the fact that many of the ingredients are just SO common. These common household ingredients can’t POSSIBLY make a difference, can they?
Take the ever-common lime. You would be hard-pressed to find someone who can’t draw or describe what a lime is, unlike more exotic ingredients like Jojoba Oil. How can something you’ve used for cooking, in your drinks and perhaps in your beer … how can the lime even be that effective for skin care?
Lime actually has 3 very specific benefits for your skin:
The only thing people have to be careful of is that fair-skinned individuals can suffer some photosensitivity. A Japanese study published in Medline entitled “A study of the phototoxicity of lemon oil” has indicated that in the presence of light, lime oil can cause some sensitivity, but only in concentrated amounts. As long as you practice moderation in your application, adverse reactions can very easily be avoided.
Don’t fret! 1 Skin’s Lime Thyme Body Wash uses a gentle amount of lime to ensure that it does not dry the skin and allows fair-skinned individuals to enjoy the product, as well. Of course, we’ve done our research to ensure that the products we produce for you leads to a better, healthier you!
There’s nothing she can’t do [Yes, obviously, she’s a woman!]. In fact, Lavandula angustifolia is her full name.
Back in the day, lavender flowers in tea are used to address digestive problems, headaches, anxiety and insomnia. It was even used as a disinfectant for combat wounds in World War 1 and in hospitals to sterilize the areas. Due to advances in technology that allow us to harness the essential oils, lavender very much still finds its way used the same therapeutic way, aside from its natural fragrance.
Did you know that lavender flowers even produce abundant nectar so it is a great plant to use for high-quality honey-making? As far as baking, Lavender flavouring is often paired with chocolate; talk about super-antioxidant!
However, you still have to be careful, as lavender is a powerful allergen, so consult your doctor before ingesting or topically using lavender while pregnant or breastfeeding. This is because lavender oil is cytotoxic (cell-killing) to human cells that are inside the body (i.e. baby, endothelial cells). All you need is proper care and consultation, in order to make sure that lavender oil does not come in actual contact with your baby.
The real palpable benefit to lavender is in skin care. Imagine this: the soothing calming fragrance combined with the antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and restorative properties of lavender – ALL IN ONE! Make sure when you order 1 Skin products, inquire about the ones that include lavender. The question is not why. After all the benefits listed above, you should really ask yourself: why not? The only acceptable answer is really pregnancy!
Did you know that the ever-popular grape seed oil is produced in abundance as a by-product of winemaking? Aside from encouraging our wine lover’s habits, there are many other benefits to grape seed oil.
Often used as the carrier oil (emollient) for bath and body product, it leaves a light thin glossy film over the skin. It keeps the skin moisturized, and has the most linoleic acid that other carrier oils. The easy reaction of the linoleic acid with oxygen in the air forms cross linking and the formation of this stable protective film.
Aside from the protective film, grape seed oil also contains the same antioxidant as the much-lauded green tea. It is called procyanidolic oligomers (PCOs). It is known to counter act free radicals in our skin that leads to aging. It is also known to have better skin restorative properties than Vitamin C and E.
Who bother scouring small-font ingredients list at the back of your industrially-produced skin products. You can choose Grape Seed Oil as 1 of 2 emollient oils in your custom-made lip balm and reap the benefits we just talked about! 1 Skin products are guaranteed all-natural!
One of my favourite parts of my business 1Skin Solution is the Custom Lip Balm sector. I loooove creating and making lip balms and I also love all the positive feedback I get from my clientele. I am lucky to have found something that I love so much I can make a business out of it. This side of our business allows us to contribute to the growth of the Australian Beauty industry. It provides a very high quality product for B2B and then onto B2C. A business owner can customise a lip balm and put their business logo on the packaging.
I have a section on my website where a customer can go in and create their lip balm. Starting with applicator choice (pots, tubes, mini tubes) and quantity they require. The min order is 50 units and the pricing depends on quantity and volume of tube/pot. The customer can then follow the steps choosing from the ingredients range and then adding tints, flavours and extras like vitamins and sunscreen. They can choose as many ingredients as they like and I will then create from them the best formula with the ingredients they have chosen. Then they will send through thier business logo or personal label design and we will outsource the printing and apply to the lip balm once it has been made.
Why Custom lip balm?
Why choose 1Skin Solution
So if you own and business or just looking for something different to give to your friends and family for the holiday season this year take a look at our Custom lip balms
If you would like to sample some of our work we offer a sample pack of 3 different balms in different packaging.
In the future we hope we can collaborate with other Australian brands and create a lip balm where proceeds can then be donated to an Australian charity. This will bring greater awareness to both brands involved and help those in need. “Brand dating” is becoming a popular way for fashion, food, beauty and many other industries’ to collaborate together and target an audience in today’s cluttered market. We believe this will provide support to, not only the Australian Beauty industry but, to Australian industry in general.
